Prenova Becomes Associate Member of the Chicago Climate Exchange

ATLANTA, GA - January 29, 2008 - Prenova is pleased to announce that the Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX) has accepted Prenova’s application for Associate Membership. The CCX operates North America’s only, and the world’s first, legally binding, multi-sector greenhouse gas (GHG) registry, reduction and trading system, with offset projects worldwide. The goals of the CCX are as follows:

  • To facilitate the transaction of GHG allowance trading with price transparency, design excellence and environmental integrity
  • To build the skills and institutions needed to cost-effectively manage GHGs
  • To facilitate capacity-building in both public and private sectors to facilitate GHG mitigation
  • To strengthen the intellectual framework required for cost effective and valid GHG reduction
  • To help inform the public debate on managing the risk of global climate change

CCX Associate Members, like Prenova, generate negligible direct emissions but do generate indirect emissions through electricity use and business travel, among other activities. Therefore, CCX Associate Members make a legally binding commitment to offset 100% of their annual indirect emissions from year of enrollment through 2010. This ensures that the atmospheric burden of GHG’s is not increased by the entity’s indirect activities during the membership period at minimum. Prenova is already well on its way to becoming a carbon neutral company.

The commodity traded at CCX is the CFI® contract, each of which represents 100 metric tons of CO2 equivalent. CFI contracts are comprised of Exchange Allowances and Exchange Offsets. Prenova will be assisting its current customers with quantifying their sustainable carbon emission reductions, secured through Prenova’s Asset OptimizationSM solution, to trade on the CCX.

“We are excited about the new opportunities that have opened up for our customer base given our membership in the CCX,” said Michael Nark, Prenova’s President and CEO. ”We plan to help our customers monetize their usage reductions. What that means is that our customers can make money on the amount of energy they reduce on a sustainable basis by taking advantage of CCX’s emission reduction and trading system. By reducing their carbon footprint, savings can be monetized and sold through the Chicago Climate Exchange with our assistance. Additionally, there’s the environmental aspect of energy reduction. Over the next five to eight years, carbon footprint reductions will be legislated, and compliance won’t be optional.”

“As support of our goal to become carbon neutral and in support of the CCX goals, our Asset Optimization solution is a clean technology,” added Nark. “Our solution is delivered remotely: while we’re reducing energy usage for a customer, we don’t effectively increase usage on our side, which would cancel out many of the benefits. In this case, the optimum in clean energy management is achieved.”

“Energy conservation isn’t about saving energy at a single point in time. An energy conservation program focuses on measurable, sustainable usage reduction. We help customers combine economic success with environmental protection. This creates a strong customer bottom line and fosters environmental stewardship.”
