Technician, Operations Control Center

Position Summary

Technical lead for energy management and refrigeration services performed for designated accounts. Analyze, diagnose, and optimize complex HVAC and refrigeration systems that include:

  • Chiller systems
  • Heat exchangers
  • Cooling Towers
  • Variable speed drives (VFDs)
  • Air handling units (AHUs)
  • Roof top units (RTUs)
  • Boilers
  • Central plants
  • Supermarket refrigeration systems 

Performs advanced alarm/condition interpretation and performance analysis on all types of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVACAR) and lighting systems. Designs, programs, commissions and re-commissions automated controls system to optimal performance parameters; performs and/or trains others in the operation, troubleshooting, and analysis of mechanical/electrical systems and automated controls. Designs and assists in development of critical decision models recognizing and resolving asset/service performance anomalies.

Performs audits of facilities and reports on recommendation for optimizing energy use and asset efficiency. Working knowledge of building simulation programs such as DOS II, Energy Plus, and Trace. Has detailed knowledge of multiple building control systems and can recommend which systems best fit given specifications. Analyzes data from control systems and designs analysis tools for providing automated analysis of the control system data.

Required Qualifications  

Knowledge 

The position requires:

  • Experience with HVACAR control/management/monitoring systems
  • Experience performing audits for large commercial facilities
  • Experience installing, programming and optimizing multiple manufacturer’s building control systems
  • Knowledge of system alarms and troubleshooting via IP network to include auto log sites for trending analysis
  • Experience with the operation, control, and maintenance of HVACAR systems
  • Working knowledge of SQL databases
  • Detailed technical understanding of the energy industry
  • Working knowledge of business operations

Customer Influence – The position involves considerable customer interface to help with problem solving and possible system emergencies. 

Communication – Proficiency in oral and written communication is required, specifically the ability to communicate technical information to non-technical customers over the telephone and in documents.

Leadership – Ability to identify problems and generate alternative solutions to meet the objective.

Education

  • Bachelors Degree in Engineering or related field
  • Certified Energy Manager or Professional Engineer
  • A major EPA Refrigeration Certification preferred

Required Experience

  • Excellent math skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Good computer skills – Excel spreadsheets and MS Access database 
  • Understanding of the following: 

a) Fundamentals of energy management
b) Advanced EMS programming
c) Blueprint reading
d) Electrical schematic reading
e) HVAC and lighting systems and troubleshooting methods
f) Refrigeration troubleshooting methods
