According to the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology1, a carbon footprint is the total amount of CO2 and other greenhouse gases, emitted over the full life cycle of the product or service. It is expressed as grams of CO2 equivalents, which accounts for the different global warming effects of different greenhouse gases. The carbon footprint is calculated using the Life Cycled Assessment (LCA) method. This established method has been standardized under ISO 14044. Carbon Emissions Tracking is the process by which optimization of energy efficiency and reduction of emissions are tracked, measured, verified, and certified for potential extraction of value and achievement of strategic goals.

Problem:  Tracking, measuring, and certifying carbon emission reductions is an evolving process. Establishing the carbon footprint starts with an understanding of scope. How does a company ensure it is following the practice and processes which will enable it to measure and verify success?

Solution: Prenova has developed tools and processes for evaluating each customer’s emissions by mapping to their energy consumption. Baselines are created from historical consumption data, medians established measuring existing performance, and initiatives identified for driving performance improvements. Tools such as Prenova’s Statistical Portfolio Profiler are able to accurately assess energy efficiencies and track carbon emissions reductions.

Steps are currently underway to certify Prenova’s processes for qualification under ISO 9000 and ISO 14000.

Outcome: After identifying our customers’ emissions footprint, Prenova will provide strategy development and support for energy efficiency programs delivering emissions reductions. We will then assist customers in the extraction of added benefits these reductions in emissions may bring from various market programs as well as greenhouse gas or renewable energy credit trading activities.
